Jonathan Syme
Orogenic Luminance; 2025
Oil on Canvas in Artist Frame; 33.5” x 30”
Jonathan Syme makes sculptural paintings that feel alive with movement. Rooted in the rhythms of landscape, his works build from thick impasto, stains, scraping, and erasure to capture the energy of place and time rather than a literal view. Colours meet, merge, and interrupt each other, often within a single gesture, creating compositions that feel both deliberate and intuitive.
Paint is material and subject at once, rising off the surface to meet the viewer’s space. Syme’s hand-built frames, painted in unexpected hues, act as extensions of the image, blurring where a painting begins and ends. Each piece is a responsive process shaped by the artist’s inner weather and the world around him, seeking harmony on the knife edge of chaos. Meaning lives with the viewer, but the aim is universal: to locate a shared pulse in abstraction.
