We’re thrilled to unveil the next instalment of our Tastemakers Artist Billboard Series at The Acorn + Lila, featuring acclaimed Vancouver artist Neil Wedman and his evocative work Rock and Roll Workbench.
Wedman’s Rock and Roll Workbench began with a defaced, graffiti-carved shop table salvaged from an East Side high school, which found its way legless and stripped of utility into his studio around 2005. After years of contemplation, Wedman reimagined the tabletop in a striking black-and-white photographic negative, transforming its chaotic carvings into something luminous and almost cosmic. The work was later published in an edition by Emily Carr University’s Read Books and featured in Wedman’s Selected Monochromes 2007 to 2011 exhibition catalogue.
A celebrated figure in Vancouver’s art scene, Wedman is known for uncovering beauty and meaning in the overlooked and everyday. His approach to Rock and Roll Workbench exemplifies his playful yet thoughtful engagement with found objects, history, and chance.
